Flip Flop & our Nation's Birthday

Whoooooooaaa!!!!! Did not see this coming, but Mike Shula is apparently one of the five finalist for the Miami Dolphins head coach position. Do you really think he would be better fitted for the pro game? After being fired from Alabama for lack, well for lack of a better word, balls, Shula apparently is in the running for a head coaching job in the NFL? Tradition tarnished by recent failures, a delusional fan base & an administration willing to pay top dollar...sounds like the job he just was fired from.

Another Whooooooaa!!! Mitch Mustain granted his release from Arkansas after Gus Malzon(sp?) leaves for Tulsa. This is evidence that a package deal rarely works out and raises serious questions about the near future in Fayetteville.

The biggest Whoooooaaa!!!! A happy birthday to Duane Rome as he celebrates another birthday.

Ladies, I am out!!!!!!!!!!!

It was nice. I was off all day. Went to the club gym and worked out, then sat in the steam room and got a good shower.

Went out to Golden Buddha with my folks and TwoBits then met up with my roomy at El Sombrero for some beers.

Went home and enjoyed our new squeef (fire by the way) while watching Amewican Ides and drinking.

Pretty good day. Got some new Brooks Brothers shirts and ties and some caaaysh. TwoBits is getting me either some new 40 lb. dumbells or a radar detector. Good b-day.

MIAMI -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick reluctantly surrendered a water bottle to security at Miami International Airport that smelled like marijuana and contained a substance in a hidden compartment.

Michael Vick

Vick

Police said Thursday it could be weeks before a decision is made on whether to file charges.

"We'll do an analysis and see what it is. There's no sense of urgency to it," Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said Thursday.

The bottle was found to have a compartment that contained "a small amount of dark particulate and a pungent aroma closely associated with marijuana," the police report said. The compartment was hidden by the bottle's label so that it appeared to be a full bottle of water when held upright, police said.

Vick entered an airport concourse Wednesday morning with the 20-ounce bottle. His initial reluctance to turn over the bottle aroused suspicion among airport security screeners, a police report said. He eventually handed it over and boarded his flight to Atlanta.

Police said the bottle was sent to the Miami-Dade County crime lab.

Vick did not immediately return a phone call early Thursday.

"We plan to look into the matter and discuss it with Michael Vick before having any further comment," Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts said.

Under Florida law, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine. First offenders rarely do any jail time.

Two Transportation Security Administration screeners recognized the 6-foot, 215-pound Vick.

Vick's younger brother, Marcus, is a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins. Michael Vick was the overall No. 1 draft pick in the 2001 NFL draft. In 2006, Michael Vick passed for more than 2,400 yards and also topped 1,000 yards rushing.

Oh, Golden Buddha is no buffet. It's a nice Chinese spot with some damn good dishes.

You know, the kind that are so big you have to share. Similar to PF Chang's restaurant. But i'll forgive your error, King, since i have been known to frequent the buffets.

From the LSU Rivals site. About Phelon Jones, d-back from Moblile who is committed to LSU..........

January 17, 2007
Saban lays it on thick
Mike Scarborough, TigerBait.com Recruiting Analyst

Alabama head coach Nick Saban arrived in Mobile Tuesday morning with all the fanfare of the President of the United States as he tried to coax McGill-Toolen cornerback Phelon Jones into reconsidering his verbal commitment to LSU.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Jones had told Nick Saban and Crimson Tide assistant Lance Thompson previously that he would not visit Alabama officially and that they would not agree to an in-home visit. When that failed, Saban asked if he could at least visit him at the school and they agreed.

"He came and spent over an hour with Phelon and I," Phelon's father Tony Jones said. "Basically what he wanted was for us to take an official visit this weekend and we told him we were not and he wanted us from there to change our commitment to them."

Saban then went on to explain why Alabama makes more sense than LSU for Jones. "He said that LSU is winning with his recruits and he said it's obvious on how well he is going to do at Alabama because of what he did at LSU," Jones said. "

Les Miles dispatched three assistant coaches via private plane to Mobile so that they would be there to speak with the Jones' as soon as Saban was done. "(Bo) Pelini and Doug Mallory who is the secondary coach and Josh Henson who recruits this area, Les put them in the jet and flew them down and they were standing in the school when Saban left," Jones said.

The two coaching staffs didn't rub elbows in the schools hallway. "They purposely stayed away until he left," Jones said. "When he left, they came over."

While Saban might be lacking in the humble department, you certainly cannot deny his confidence to the point of extreme arrogance.

"Saban's sales pitch is, look, I'm a head coach and I also coach the secondary, where are you going to find that America," Jones said. "He said I coach it for a reason because I am the best there is at it.

"He said, I turned the program around at Michigan State, I turned the program around at LSU and he said I have more to work with at Alabama."

Saban also spoke with the Jones' about Phelon's abilities as a cornerback. "He talked about how good Phelon was and how there weren't that many cornerbacks out there that are 6-feet tall, 190-pounds and can run a 4.38 40," Jones said. "He said Phelon looks like cornerbacks he had at the Miami Dolphins when he walks through the door."

The meeting did not end with Saban getting his final answer as he said that he would call in a day or two. "Here is how we ended it. He never really asked us for a definite. They are going to call us back today or tomorrow."

When the meeting was over and they all stepped outside, the Mobile media was there in force. "I was walking with Phelon to sign him back into class and there were three television stations were there," Jones said. "They stuck microphones in Phelons face and were all asking, did you decommit, did you decommit. He said no, are you going to Alabama, no no no, we are not going to Alabama."

Living in Mobile means that the majority of residents are fans of the Crimson Tide and Jones is hearing it from all directions.
"People think that we are crazy and have done lost our mind, because they have Nick Saban," Jones said. "People are asking stuff like what did he have on. "They can't believe that Nick Saban is here to recruit you and to get you to Alabama and do you understand what that means."

Jones says that when Lance Thompson phones, he will be told that there will not be any official visit or change of plans.
"We are just going to tell him that we are not going to take an in-home visit or a trip," Jones said. "We met with them at the school enjoyed talking with him, great guy but he is a little bit overconfident."

AU just got a committ from Lee Ziemba. 6'7" 295 OT from Arkansas. Possibly a starter from day one. Pretty good OL class shaping up. And God knows we need it after the debacle last year that almost got our QB's leg amputated.

I have been getting calls from Auburn, an 844 # so I think they think I have already made my millions.

LSU is BLASTING Saban every chance they get. I couldn't care any less than i already do, but this is pretty funny and i'm bored so i figured i would post it and see if DR gets pissed at me.

Another from the LSU Rivals Site...

LSU defensive line commitments Luther Davis and Will Blackwell were both visited by new Alabama head coach Nick Saban on Wednesday as the former LSU coach is hoping to lure some Louisiana prospects to Tuscaloosa.

Mike Scarborough

Davis is adamant about his commitment to LSU
"It went pretty good and it was impressive to meet with Nick Saban but I really don't feel any different about him than any other coach," Davis said. "He was just telling us about his plan for Alabama and how he is the centerpiece of all the changes that is currently going on at LSU and he is the reason that LSU is the way it is now.

"He says he plans on doing the same thing at Alabama and turn things around."

Both LSU commitments were open with Saban about the finality of their pledge to LSU and Les Miles.

"He told me that he wanted me there but I told him I was solid to LSU and I don't think that is going to change and Will told him the same thing," Davis said. "He was kind of mad that we turned down the visit and turned down the scholarship.

"I have been around and I know where I want to be and that is at LSU."

Saban used his national championship coaching credentials from LSU to try to illustrate what he believes is best for the Louisiana four-star prospects.

"What he was saying is that the coaching staff he has at Alabama is pretty much the same coaching staff he had at LSU when he won a national championship," Davis said. "He said that there is no way that the coaching staff at LSU can compare to the coaching staff he has at Alabama right now.

In the meeting, Davis mentioned how he admired two defensive ends that were signed and coach by Saban.

"I told him awhile back that my favorite defensive ends were Marcus Spears and Marquise Hill and he was telling me that if I were to come there that he would make it to where I am better than them.

"I think I am a pretty good player but I respect those guys and it will take me a long time to get to the level that they were at."

Davis gave Saban some of the reasons why he is comfortable with his decision to sign with LSU.

"I told him that the main reasons I am going to LSU is the players there that I know and the academic center," Davis said. "I feel confident that if I go in and focus that I can graduate in three and a half to four years.

"He was talking about how he built the academic center, raised the money for it, which he did and that's all fine and good but he's not there anymore. He said that Alabama already has an academic center that is better than LSU's and for me to just come and take a look. I'll just take his word for it because I'm pretty solid."

When Saban left, Davis and Blackwell discussed their meeting with the new Crimson Tide coach.

"Really, the first thing we were saying is how about we are going to be Bama in the next four-to-five years."

Davis remarked about how Saban didn't want to give anyone at LSU any credit for what has taken place since he left in December of 2004.

"I asked him about some of the guys that are at LSU right now and he said he was not familiar with them but he said whatever is going on there is not better than what he has going on at Alabama right now. He gave no credit to anyone."

Yesterday afternoon, the LSU coaches arrived at West Monroe.

"Coach (Josh) Henson and Coach (Earl) Lane were just telling us to ignore that and not even worry about it that it's people like that that keeps LSU hungry and wanting more," Davis said. "They are right because I was motivated off the stuff that Coach Saban was saying."

Davis and his family were familiar with Saban when he was at LSU as he recruited his older brother.

"He came across as arrogant when he was recruiting my brother and my family didn't like that then," Davis said. "I seriously would not be going to LSU if he were still there."
